Order Custom Lanyards

Order Custom Lanyards ImageLike with so many other products these days, many businesses order custom lanyards online. This probably works out well for both the buyer and seller, online advertising costs are far lower than buying space in magazines and on billboards for adverts, and advertising is far more measurable online also. In fact, many of the lanyard suppliers I speak to get the majority of their lanyard orders from the internet, with the remainder of their business coming in from referrals – often referrals which can be traced back to someone who found them online in the first place.

So if you are about to order custom lanyards for your business, you can probably find a top supplier online, and in most cases you should be able to even fill out an online order form with all your specifications. That’s not to say you can’t phone them up first to confirm a few details, but the variety of ways of doing business is ever increasing. And once you have found a supplier you are happy with, and who you have ordered from before, it is extremely convenient if they have an online order form where you can simply fill out your specifications, upload your logo, and send it for processing.

In this article I will give an overview of the order process, covering the main elements you will need to be clear about before making your order:

How To Order Custom Lanyards:

1. Types of Lanyard

The first thing you will need to consider is the type of lanyard you want to order. By now, and if you have read any of the other articles on this website, you will know that there is a wide variety of different lanyards available, each with different benefits.

One of the most common types of lanyard, and often the cheapest, is the bootlace or tubular lanyard, just like a bootlace, these lanyards are double thickness and are the opposite of a ribbon lanyard which is just one strip. They mainly come in nylon or polyester materials and are available in many colours and can be printed on. you may, instead, opt for the ribbon lanyard which is also popular and comparitively cheap. A step up from these are the woven lanyards, which may also be available in other materials.

Each type of lanyard will be available in a range of sizes, which tends to be along the lines of 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 20mm and 25mm. A ‘pure’ bootlace lanyard might be as narrow as 5mm and some of the ribbon lanyards can be even wider than 25mm.

2. Lanyard Colours

In addition to deciding on the type of lanyard you want to order, and the size, you will next need to consider the color. If you have a designer who has worked on your branding previously, it is a good idea to have a chat with him or her to get the exact colour reference so everything looks the same.

One thing to bare in mind when considering color is that printing custom lanyards is different to printing stationery and that kind of thing. Many lanyard printers use screen printing processes which use different inks and dyes to those used when printing on paper. Most screen printers will work from Pantone (PMS) colour references which you should know befroe ordering. Again, ask your designer for your specifications if you do not know them yourself.

If you have chosen a woven lanyard, then you may be asked what individual weave colors you want.

3. Ordering Quantity

This should be a simple matter, and without knowing anything about your needs I can hardly offer any advice, but in a recent article on this site I did discuss the matter of people searching for custom lanyards with no minimum order, so I just thought I would refer to it here.

Whenever you are ordering marketing and promotional materials such asĀ  this, look ahead to other occasions and other needs in the future. Your per item price lowers according to how many you order. Any business that searches for minimum quantities is working with a false economical outlook. Buying 50 lanyards can be just the same price as buying 200. Always plan ahead and save yourself money in the future, always order more than you need!

4. Lanyard Attachments & Connectors

If you are ordering lanyards for use within your company or organisation then you will probably already have an idea of what purpose they are required to fulfil. If you are ordering them as a promotional item, then it’s worth considering the options available to you, so you can decide which would be most likely to appeal.

Lanyards designed to hold ID cards and similar items usually just need an aligator clip of some kind. These usually come in both plastic and metal, often with a swivel also. Sometimes, all that is needed is a hook or other type clip. Consider the type of card that needs to be attached to it, and what sort of enclosure it is likely to be in. Most often, your lanyard supplier will also be able to supply you with card holders.

Another popular attachment is a phone holder, these are often also available in a detachable clip. For safety, and convenience, many clips also come in detachable forms. Other custom clips are available including water bottle holders, carabiners, and length adjusters. Find out what your supplier has available and check it against your needs. Sometimes, the added convenience of a swivel clip or length adjuster can make all the difference.

5. Customizing the Design of Your Lanyard

To some, the most important aspect of consideration is the design – ie, what goes on the custom lanyard. Whether you simply want your logo or marketing message, or whether you want an elaborate design printed on it, the supplier will need to have some artwork or instructions from you to proceed.

If you have a designer, then it would be a good idea to ask them to provide artwork, but it’s a good idea to know what is necessary.

If you are opting for a simple marketing message, or just text of any kind, then all you have to do is type it up and explain your preferences regarding style and colour and that’s about it. But if you want a very specific look, a logo or unusual typeface, then you will need to create your own artwork and send it to the supplier. This usually takes the form of an image file such as a .png, .gif, .eps, or .tif file. When you send a file like this then you can be sure you will be getting exactly what you specified.

I hope this guide to ordering custom lanyards has been of use to you. If you need to know more, then check out our other articles on the website, we are adding to them every week so you can always return and find out more.
