Custom Lanyard No Minimum Order

Custom Lanyard No Minimum Order ImageI recently discovered a suprising figure, that of the highest Google searches for custom lanyards is ‘custom lanyards with no minimum order‘. I assume that business owners, marketers or individuals are typing this in to Google to discover manufacturers and suppliers that will produce and deliver even a very small number of items. Having spoken to a wide range of manufacturers and suppliers I am curious about this statistic, since it seems to make little sense when all things are considered.

With much of the world’s manufacturing and printing being done in Asia and China these days, two considerations are paramount. The first is that materials and labour costs are at their lowest since the industrial revolution, and the second is that speed of delivery has become a greater factor when balanced against cost. Local manufacturers and suppliers are constantly trying to compete on price due to the world market economy while their main competitive element is in their ability to deliver quickly once an order has been filled.

Custom Lanyards With No Minimum Order

But where does a minimum order come into this? In theĀ  past, those businesses that dealt with large runs were less likely to consider short or small runs. And if a business wanted only a small number of personalized lanyards, they might find themselves restricted to one or two suppliers and a higher cost than they expected. But things have changed, due to the reduction in materials and labour costs, smaller orders are less costly than they were, and minimum order restrictions have dropped considerably for the sake of competitiveness.

Although that’s not to say that if you order a supplier’s minimum quantity of lanyards, that you’d get a good deal.

Let’s take a look at some examples of minimum orders. I phoned round a few suppliers today to ask what their minimum order amount was for the cheapest custom lanyards they offered. Minimum orders were quoted as small as an order of 50 polyester lanyards of 15mm width. But here’s the important bit: when I asked what the unit price was for an order of 100 lanyards, it was 25% less per unit. And when I asked what the cost for 1000 units would be, it was more than 80% cheaper than the minimum order unit price.

Based on the huge rise in unit price, between an order of 50-100 and an order of 1000+, you can end up paying the same for a small order of personalized lanyards as you would for a larger one. Consider this point carefully. Many businesses that make minimum orders are doing so due to a lack of planning, rather than a reduced need. Those same businesses that make minimum orders are frequently making further minimum orders within months. If all those orders have been made together and at once, a considerable saving both in time and money could have been made.

Then if you use a supplier that charges a set up price (not all suppliers do this), usually this is in relation to setting up screens for printing, you will pay a standard set up fee which will be the same regardless of how large or small your order.

This was a common factor among all the suppliers I called: Minimum orders are less cost effective. Planning well in advance and estimating the number of lanyards you might need over a longer period may allow you to justify a larger order, which could feasibly cost the same as the minimum order but you’d get more use out of it.

So my advice is to consider your reasons for searching for custom lanyards with no minimum order, many suppliers have such low minimum order requirements that you should be able to find one that accommodates your needs. But unless your need is truly a one off, never again need, then most businesses would benefit from larger orders and lower prices.
