Custom lanyards have become a very popular option for businesses wanting to promote their products or services, or simply as part of a brand awareness campaign. Often, when an event or presentation comes up, a business will only require custom lanyards in small quantity, in order to keep costs down and avoid the need to use space storing unwanted items. Fortunately, most printers and custom lanyard suppliers are able to produce very small quantities of custom lanyards, and many have no minimum order atall. So for those businesses which require only a small number of lanyards created, there are plenty of options available.
But buying custom lanyards in small quantities is not the most cost effective method of purchasing these items. Even with suppliers who offer no minimum orders or who are able to supply small quantity of lanyards, you will find that the per item cost increases, the less items you order. This simply means that the less lanyards you order, the more you pay for them individually.
Custom Lanyards Small Quantity And Minimum Order
For example, as I pointed out in a recent article about Custom Lanyards No Minimum Order (click on the underlined text to read it), after phoning round some local lanyard suppliers the price of each lanyard was 25% less for orders of 100, than for small quantity orders of 50. And the per unit cost of each lanyard was 80% cheaper for orders of 1000 lanyards, than for minimum orders of 50. That’s quite a difference. And what if you regularly order quantity of 50 lanyards at a time.
Small quantities of custom lanyards, or just about anything else, for that matter, must be necessarily small, and must be one-offs. If you know you are only ever going to use 50 lanyards then it would be silly to order 1000 just to reduce your unit cost. But if there is a chance you might need to order more at any time then you need to reconsider whether you are making a sensible financial decision.
Custom Lanyards Small & Single Quantity
From my enquiries, it seemed that the quantity of 50 was just about the minimum order most custom lanyard suppliers would go to. Some suppliers charged a set-up fee, which meant that there was an initial cost, no matter how many items you ordered. Presumably all suppliers incur the same costs but others factor those costs into the price rather than declarinig it as a separate ‘set-up’ fee. With the per item price rising, for the less items you order, any quantity below about 50 is not going to get much cheaper, if atall. So even if you only need about 10, you would probably make no saving compared to an order of 50.
The only other option available for this kind of custom lanyard small quantity order, is to avoid the large quantity suppliers, who struggle to compete on price for less than about 50 items. And go instead to designers, crafts people and suppliers who specialise in producing very small and one-off quantities of custom lanyards, and other things.

If you really do only need a handful of items, then these handmade and ‘cottage industry’ suppliers will offer you a far better deal than most large quantity and industrial suppliers.
In conclusion, the strategy you must adopt for small quantity orders is as follows. Be honest with yourself about how many items you really need. And take a moment to consider whether you are likely to be making a repeat order at any time in the next year or so. If, after this, you conclude that you really do only need 50 or more custom lanyards printed, then phone around the main printers and suppliers for the best minimum order prices. But if you only require 50 or less items, you might consider approaching some handmade suppliers also and comparing prices with the larger suppliers. Handmade items may also reduce in cost the more you order, but for single or one-off orders, or very small orders, they will most likely offer not only a more competitive price, but quite possibly better quality product also.
